Back to School…. already?

I can’t believe how fast the summer has zoomed by!  School starts in 2 weeks and we still have to take our family vacation.  So, with tons of errands ahead of us, the kids and I set out yesterday to get school supplies before they are all picked over.  Thank goodness we did because we’re still missing 2 canvas zippered pencil pouches. I honestly don’t believe they exist in Greenwood.  After visiting four (that’s right, 4) stores I decided I’ll have to google them online.  But that’s not even the best part, lol!  While we were in School Tools a newspaper reporter interviewed the kids and I about “back to school” shopping.  Of course I gave her my piece of mind about these pencil pouches and about everything else I could think of at the moment with 2 kids, now in our fourth store and 100 degrees outside.  So… when she asked to take our picture, I had to politely inform her NOT to shoot my rear!!!  OMG… I now know how you guys feel when I take your picture!  But… you know I’ll take care of you, I don’t have a clue how her pictures will turn out.  I guess now I’ll have to wait and see what this frazzled image looks like.  If you see me in the paper…now you know the whole story!  Too funny!

PS:  If you know where to get zippered canvas pencil pouches… TELL ME!

In the midst of the storm!; Greenwood Portrait Studio

Things are CRAzY here at the studio!  In the midst of a storm is really an understatement… it’s more like a tornado!!  We are in the middle of renovations… HuGe WonderFul changes.  All of the carpet is out, but with only 1/2 of the floors are down so I’m basically working in a construction zone!   My husband is a dream! (I pray he doesn’t read this b/c I’ll never live it down) but he is a master handy man.  I wanted the chandelier in the most impossible place… and he did it! (Big Smooch!) The floors… he’s doing them, the bar, check, the table, check, the whatever, check check check!  I’m smiling even though my world is upside down right now!

So… during all of chaos my postings have been few and far between… however things couldn’t be better… or should I say more beautiful.  Take a look at these recent session shots and enjoy!

Miss Photogenic times 3! Headshots, Greenwood, SC

Yesterday Caroline and I spent our Sunday afternoon behind the scenes at the Lakelands Triple Crown Little Miss Preliminary Pageant. This was our first pageant experience and I was amazed at all of the prep work that goes into pageants. Lip gloss, hair spray… and I’m talking some serious hair spray… to the point that NOTHING moves on your head, beautiful dresses, and the walk. If you’ve ever even watched a pageant then you know what I’m talking about when I say “The Walk”. These girls are always working to perfect it and there were several past winners around coaching them on. Anyway.. let me get on to the actual event. The little ones were so cute and loved getting all dressed up, the middle aged girls (8-13) listened to their mom as they were instructed on smiling, walking and turning. The older ones… teens 14-18, well, by that age they basically seemed to know it all and coached each other.. definitely NOT listening to mom, but heeding the advice of past winners.

Finally the time came and winners were announced. I was so happy for the girls that won… especially those who seemed truly surprised, but I was even more excited with the Headshot winners! There were 3 contestants who entered head shots by Holubek Photography… and… As Caroline and I were listening through an entry door with a big window (she and I were supposed to be dressing room, but had to sneak a peek) I hear… The winner of the Black and White Miss Photogenic for the Young Miss division is ‘Sarah Bates’…. YES! Then next, The winner of the Colored Miss Photogenic for the Young Miss division is Fallon Ferguson, YES! Then it was on to the Teen Miss division and the winner of the Colored Miss Photogenic head shot was… Jessica Phillips, YES, YES, YES! 3 for 3! I’m batting a thousand!

So the day ended on a happy note! We took pictures of beautiful girls, met lots of really nice people and learned a lot about pageant life! Thank you Janie Letourneau for inviting us to such a fun event.

2010 Southern Elegance Prom Shootout: Prom Pictures, Greenwood, SC

_MG_4537 BLOG

What an AWESOME time we had Sunday at the Southern Elegance Bridal and Prom Boutique in Greenwood, SC!!! OMG!! The gowns… the girls… the food… the gowns… the guys… the tux… the gowns… the flowers… the hair stylist… the make-up artist… the gowns… music… the goodie bags… and yes..the photographer!! It was like New York in Greenwood!

This was a week full of excitement leading up to the big finale. Southern Elegance kept assuring me there were plenty of gowns….. we ONLY scratched the surface!! This shoot could have gone on all night with the number of gowns they have to choose from. (and I hear more are arriving daily!) Then there was Don at Formal Occasions – Thank You for the penguin suits…. the guys looked incredible! Oh…did you see the boutineers and corsages? Jana Whitt, who by the way is a marvelous bridal & speciality florist, hooked us up!! WOW! (tell her I sent you and you’ll receive 10% off of your prom flowers! Woo Hoo!) She can totally match anything and even do some funky stuff too!

So….. who was behind the scenes in all of this hotness? Well… besides Southern Elegance and their wonderful attendants, the models let me restate this… the GIRL models, lol, were pampered and primped by Make-up Artist Mary Margret Davis. She put an emphasis on their eyes and lips… I wanted sparkle and shine on their lips along with deep dark beautiful eyes.! And let me tell you… I could get used to snapping my fingers for lip gloss!! Isn’t funny how the simplest things can be so much fun!! (Why can’t things work like this with my kids? lol!) Then there was Hair… Hair… and more Hair! MaryAnn Nickles (from Eddies in Greenwood) teased, sprayed, wrapped, curled, straightened, poofed, scrunched…um… I think that’s all of the hair terminology I know, lol…but… She did it ALL!!! Of course it’s back to those little things like MaryAnn running her fingers through a girls hair and loosening it all up for me… I like it messy and blowing everywhere… and she got it! She perfected messy, big and blowing!

The video is AWESOME and showcases everyone in their Haute Coutureness! You should be able to see it below… but it is also on facebook. There are tons of pictures on Facebook… so 1 (flash), 2 (flash), 3 (flash) Go To Your Room, Go check them out!

My Christmas Card! I love it!: Graphic Design, Greenwood, SC

I absolutely love my Christmas card this year, and I think part of the reason is that is was a spur of the moment decision that worked out Wonderfully! So, yes, I was busy this December….. R-E-A-L-L-Y Busy, and know that next year I’ll start Christmas work, shopping, baking, wrapping, kid wrangling, etc much earlier (famous last words, right!), because this year everything landed me – BAM – all at once.

Caroline’s schedule was a big part of it all – please tell me how do you cart your children around and still manage to put dinner on the table. Well.. I guess I did have dinner… but it was mostly Chick-Fil-A, Migs, and frozen pizza! This was between theater performances, her piano recital and chorus performances – and I’m sure many of you do much more than this!

So, there i was December 17th without a Christmas card and not one creative idea and I knew how much trouble I would have with Jake who despises the camera, Caroline who tells everyone how to pose, me who has to make sure the lighting is just perfect and Hubie… well, he just wants to go fishing. How could I possibly get us dressed to perfection, find the a spot that would be awesome and make sure we all looked happy while freezing our %$# off outside! I was truly screaming inside. Then it was like floating feathers from heaven raining down on me, and a voice in my head saying…. shoot your legs, shoot your legs, SHOOT YOUR LEGS!!! Seriously, I didn’t even have to think twice -even when my sister called me wierd, my mom said “only you”, and my house keeper said “are you sure?”- This was an incredible idea and we were dressed, no hair fixing, no adjusting chins, or silly smiles, and Jake would not have to get dressed at all. (If you have a boy you soooo know what I’m dealing with here, lol).

Whew, I’m out of breath, but that’s how it went down. I set the camera on a tripod, adjusted the camera settings and pre-focused, then I showed Jake’s 2nd grade friend, Ryan, the button to press and ran to my spot. Wow, he’s good! Jake is yelling at him, but then again so was I… well not yelling, but he kept saying “Mrs. Karen, I don’t think your heads are showing” too funny! I assured him it was fine…..perfectly fine.

The Big Day is here!

And my kids are so excited! It’s cookie day, and I’ll have you know right away we make gourmet cookies. Yes, these recipes have been handed my my (second mom) Aunt Corrie who is an awesome gourmet cook. Although I have several different Swiss recipes, we’ll be making Mailanderli and Spitzbuebe cookies today. Go look them up – YUUUMMMIIIEEE! Along with these we’ll make sausage balls and gingersnaps! Well, we’re hoping these gingersnaps will turn out better than the last ones where we added 1 1/4 CUPS of cinnamon rather than 1 1/4 teaspoons!!!

I love to bake with the kids, we laugh, mix and eat tons of dough! …. and, Yes my kitchen will be a disaster (I’m talking total train wreck with the flour) and my nerves will be shot, but it’s nothing that a little soap, water and wine won’t cure!
